It was brought up that before I go about criticizing other people's writing, I should put my own out on display first. Here is what I've written.
The difference between a good essay and a bad essay is that good essays are read willingly. Bad essays are only read because someone is paid to read them. Too often, I see applicants write their grad school statements of purpose in the following form:
I wrote this in 2018. If I recall, my statements of purpose for all my graduate school applications were more or less modified versions of my NSF GRFP application essay. Honestly, I'm surprised how un-bad I find this, 3 years later. I'm not so conceited as to claim it's good, because that's for you to decide.
